How to get interviews after 100 applications: the short answer
It's not just you. The U.S. added only 29,000 jobs in September 2026, unemployment was 4.2%, and 1.9 million people had been looking for 27 weeks or more (BLS). Employers announced 90,787 hiring plans in September, the lowest for that month since 2011 (Challenger, Gray & Christmas). You can't fix the market, but you can fix how your applications get read.
1. Audit your funnel
Count the last 4–8 weeks. No replies at all usually points to the resume or the match; replies but no interviews point to the phone screen.
2. Make your resume readable to software
Greenhouse, a widely used applicant tracking system, says resumes can fail to parse because of columns, tables, headers and footers, contact info in a text box, graphics, image files, spaced-out letters, unclear section headings, abbreviated titles, or files over 2.5 MB. Use one column and plain headings, with your contact details in the body.
3. Match the job ad's words, honestly
In a Harvard Business School and Accenture study, 88% of employers agreed that qualified high-skills candidates get screened out because they don't match the exact criteria in the job description (94% for middle-skills roles). Use the ad's exact terms where they're true for you.
4. Send fewer, better applications
Apply to roles where you meet most of the must-haves, on the company's own site when you can. Twenty careful applications teach you more than a hundred generic ones.
5. Reach a person
For each application, send one short note (under 100 words, one clear ask) to a recruiter, the hiring manager, or someone on the team. Follow up once after about a week, then let it go.
6. Track, prepare, and avoid scams
Log every application and message, and prepare five short stories for interviews. Never pay to get a job, and never deposit a check and send money back; the FTC says both are scams.
