How no tax on tips works: the short answer
For tax years 2025 through 2028, eligible workers can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips per return on the new Schedule 1-A (IRS). More than 4.6 million taxpayers had claimed it on 2025 returns by late March 2026, according to the Treasury Secretary. For 2026 returns, filed in early 2027, your W-2 should show qualified tips separately for the first time.
1. Check your occupation
Only tips earned in a job on the IRS list of occupations that customarily received tips qualify (IRS list). The final rules list more than 70, from servers and bartenders to hairdressers, delivery drivers, and content creators.
2. Separate tips from service charges
Qualified tips are voluntary: cash, card, check, or app tips the customer chose to pay, including tip-pool shares. Automatic gratuities and mandatory service charges are wages, not tips. Crypto and non-cash tips don't count.
3. Keep records, and check your 2026 W-2
Report tips to your employer and keep a monthly log. From 2026, W-2s show qualified tips in box 12 with code TP and your occupation code in box 14b.
4. Check the income phaseout
Example: $20,000 of tips with $160,500 of modified AGI, single: $10,500 over is 11 steps, so the deduction is $18,900 (our math).
5. Know what it doesn't do
It lowers federal income tax only. Social Security and Medicare taxes still apply, your state may treat tips differently, and married couples must file jointly. You need a Social Security number valid for work. You don't have to itemize.
6. File it with Schedule 1-A
Attach Schedule 1-A to Form 1040. The 2026 form was still an IRS draft on Oct 7, 2026, and the 2027 filing-season start date wasn't announced. The filing deadline is April 15, 2027. Related: overtime premium pay can be deducted up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint) (IRS).
General education, not tax, legal, or financial advice. Forms and dates for 2026 returns were not all final on October 7, 2026. Confirm at IRS.gov or with a tax professional.
