How to sound like a local in LA: the short answer
Put “the” before freeway numbers, learn the weather and food words, and drop the giveaways (“Cali,” “hella”). Six starters from the 100 in the guide:
1. Say “the 405”, not “405”
Southern Californians put “the” before freeway numbers: the 405, the 10, the 101. Freeways, not highways; everything else is “surface streets.”
2. Know your SigAlert
A traffic alert for an unplanned lane closure, named after radio executive Loyd Sigmon, not “signal.”
3. Blame June Gloom
May Gray and June Gloom are the coastal clouds of early summer. The Santa Anas are the hot, dry fall winds.
4. Get stoked, not “hella” excited
Stoked, gnarly, rad and epic come from surf culture (USC Dornsife). “Hella” is Bay Area; in LA it gives you away.
5. Order Animal Style
The In-N-Out secret-menu order: mustard-cooked patty, extra spread, pickles, grilled onions. Tacos? Corn tortillas.
6. Over the hill = the Valley
In LA, someone “over the hill” lives in the San Fernando Valley (Time Out LA).
