How to sound like a local in Miami: the short answer
Learn the small Spanish and Spanglish words that sit inside English sentences, the Miami-English phrases built from Spanish, and the local map and food words. Pronounce the Spanish words the Spanish way. Here are six starters from the 100 in the guide.
1. Say “dale” (DAH-leh)
OK, let’s go, do it, bye: Miami’s all-purpose yes. Listed by the Miami New Times, CBS Miami and the University of Miami.
2. Add “pero like” and “super”
“Pero like, the croquetas are amazing.” “Suuuper bad traffic.” Spanglish fillers and intensifiers are everyday Miami speech.
3. Recognize “get down from the car” and “make the line”
English phrases translated from Spanish (bajar del carro, hacer la fila). FIU linguists found Miamians rate them as fine; “get down from the car” has stuck with Miami-born speakers.
4. Order coffee like a local
A cafecito is one small sweet Cuban espresso; a colada comes with tiny cups to share; a cortadito has steamed milk. Order at the ventanita.
5. Shorten the map
The Gables, the Grove, the Key, the Beach, Dade, Broward. Late? Blame the Palmetto.
6. Know the hurricane words
Hurricane season runs June 1 – November 30. A watch means conditions are possible, a warning means they are expected (NOAA National Hurricane Center).
