How to dispute a credit report error: the short answer
You can get free reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion every week at AnnualCreditReport.com (FTC). Credit reporting is the most complained-about topic at the CFPB: about 5.8 million complaints in 2025, 88% of all it received. Disputes are free, and a bureau usually has 30 days to investigate.
1. Get all three reports
AnnualCreditReport.com or 1-877-322-8228. Checking your own report doesn't affect your score.
2. Review line by line
Personal details, every account, late marks, balances, collections, inquiries, and anything older than 7 years (10 for bankruptcies).
3. Gather proof
Statements, payment confirmations, letters, or an identity theft report. Send copies, keep originals.
4. Dispute with the bureau
Online, by phone, or by certified mail. Explain what's wrong and what it should say (FTC: disputing errors).
5. Dispute with the company too
The lender or collector that reported it must also investigate and correct what it sends to every bureau.
6. Track 30 days, then escalate
Not fixed? Dispute again with new proof, add a statement, or file a complaint with the CFPB. No one can legally remove accurate, timely information, so skip anyone who charges up front to "fix" your credit.
