How to make a wedding budget: the short answer
The average U.S. wedding cost $34,000 in 2025 (median $24,000), for 117 guests: about $292 per guest. 41% of couples went over budget (The Knot 2026 Real Weddings Study). Those are averages, not targets. The budget that holds is the one built from money you really have.
1. Agree on the real number
2. Count the guests first
Many costs scale per person: catering, bar, rentals, cake, invitations, and venue size. At the 2025 average of $292 a guest, 27 fewer guests is about $7,900 (our math on the average).
3. Pick your priorities
Each partner ranks a top three. Spend on the shared ones; trim or skip the rest.
4. Split the plan by category
2025 averages for context: venue $12,900, photographer $3,000, florist $2,800, dress $2,100, DJ $1,800, catering $80 a head (The Knot). Your region may differ a lot.
5. Compare all-in quotes
Base price plus tax, service charge, delivery and overtime. Read the cancellation and date-change terms before paying a deposit.
6. Calendar every payment
Deposits and balances by date. Paying by credit card and then paying the card off gives you dispute rights under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FTC).
